More and more expectant mothers are discovering the benefits of chiropractic care before, during and after pregnancy.
Without the worries of drugs, mothers are getting natural relief from pregnancy aches and pains.  Chiropractors are also
able to assist babies who are in breech presentation with the Webster Breech Technique.  Deliveries can also be shorter
and have fewer complications when the mother is under chiropractic care.

But what about the baby?

Oftentimes the first question a pregnant mother asks is, “Will chiropractic care hurt my baby?”
The answer is, no.

Midwives, doulas and a growing number of obstetricians are recognizing the value of chiropractic adjustments to an
expectant mother.  Chiropractic techniques are modified to accommodate the mother’s changing body shape.  In fact, when
gently adjusting the mother’s spine to restore proper nerve function in her body, her body in turn, can then better care for the
growing baby within.

Chiropractic is helpful during all stages of pregnancy:

Pre-Conception

The nervous system controls and regulates every cell, tissue and organ of your body. As chiropractors, we locate
interferences to this brain-to-body and body-to-brain communication. Infertile parents may have neurological compromise in
their lower spine, affecting the reproductive organs.  Restore proper nervous system communications and we see more
regular menstrual cycle, optimal uterine function and restored fertility.

Pregnancy

During the course of pregnancy, regular chiropractic care can help in many ways:

  • Maintain ligament flexibility
  • Promote proper balance and pelvic integrity
  • Reduce low back pain and sciatica
  • Increased energy and vitality
  • Reduce and/or eliminate the frequency and duration of headaches
  • Helps with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Decreased labor delivery time
  • Chiropractic care can help the baby too

Breech Presentation

Near the end of pregnancy, the baby typically settles into a head-down position for birthing.  Sometimes, the baby is unable to
assume a head-down position and is presented as “breech”.  Chiropractic’s Webster Technique balances the pelvic
ligaments and sacrum to allow the baby to correctly reposition head-down.  This technique is non-invasive and safely allows
the baby to turn.  The Webster Technique enjoys a high success rate.

Aug; 25(6)).

Dr. Laura Nicholson is Webster certified.

Labor and Birth

When the mother is relaxed and supple during labor, the baby can move more easily through the birth canal.  This often
translates into shorter labor times and less intervention. One study revealed that women receiving chiropractic care enjoyed
24% to 39% shorter labor. In addition, less “back labor” is reported.

After Birth

Any birth, natural or assisted, can stress a baby’s spine.  Birth trauma often shows up as colic, poor eating habits or sleep
cycles.  Breastfeeding problems can arise if the baby is unable to comfortably turn its head to one side or the other.  Several
studies have shown chiropractic care helpful in cases of infantile colic.
Having the nervous system function at its optimum, especially when pregnant, is important. This creates the best possible
environment for the baby to realize his or her fullest potential.  What a wonderful way to start life.
